The CPU (Central Processing Unit, or Processor)

The processor is part of a retail package, so it comes with a heatsink and fan.  Since the Celeron line has a low operating temperature and we’re not overclocking it, we won’t need to purchase a more effective aftermarket cooler; the one included will be sufficient.  When we open up the box, we can see the processor chip is a very small part compared to its heatsink.  At this point, we don’t need to handle the processor, but let’s look at the heatsink more closely.

Looking at the underside of the heatsink, we find a thermal pad on top of the copper core, surrounded by the aluminum dissipaters.  Whenever you attach a heatsink to a processor, you need a thermal compound or pad to create a solid bond for heat transfer, or the processor will overheat.  When dealing with higher-end components, use an aftermarket heatsink and Arctic Silver compound for the best cooling setup, but for this system, the thermal pad and stock heatsink will do the job.
