The Hard Drive

The hard drive comes packaged in bubble-wrap and an anti-static bag since it’s OEM or sold as a bare drive only.  If it were the retail version, it would come in a box with extra packaging, a boot-disk, some documentation, and possibly a cable or some screws.  We don’t need any of this since we have enough screws from the case and our cable came with the motherboard. Touch the grounded power supply and open the bag.  When we open it up, the best place to set it is on its anti-static bag.

On the top of the hard drive is a label explaining the specifications of the drive.  This will tell us how to set up the jumper(s) on the drive, so it knows what to do.  It demonstrates the jumper settings for Master, Slave, and Cable-Select.  On the back-end of the drive are 3 areas: the 40-pin Parallel ATA/IDE connector, the 10-pin jumper-setting area, and the 4-pin Molex power connector.  Serial ATA hard drives have slightly different connections, but the general principle is the same.
