The Optical Drive

The DVD-ROM is also packaged in bubble-wrap as an OEM product, but since it isn’t very sensitive to ESD like the hard drive, the extra anti-static bag isn’t needed.  If we purchased a retail version of this drive, it would come in more packaging with a manual, and at least one disk with DVD-playing software.  Some models even include interchangeable face-plates (black and beige) to match your case.  Looking at the drive, there’s nothing interesting on the top, but at the rear, just like the hard drive, we find the connectors.

We won’t use any of the first three groups of pins (the unlabeled group of 6 pins, the Digital Audio connector and the Analog Audio connector) but the second three groups are important.  Group number 4 (6 pins with a jumper) sets the drive’s hierarchy in relation to other drives that share its cable.  The fifth group, consisting of 40 pins, is for the IDE cable connection to the motherboard.  The last group is the 4-pin Molex power connector.
